You may have noticed that there is a lot of blush pink fashion coming for spring. The color is definitely not just for the cheeks this year. However, when it comes to wearing blush, it really isn't the easiest color for most to wear. In fact, I only have one client in 12 years of styling women who could probably exclusively wear it without any other shades thrown in. Her coloring is similar to Grace Kelly's, soft, low contrast, she's blonde and looks good in pastel colors. What this means is that there will be a disproportionate amount of blush clothing and accessories out there in relationship to those who can actually wear it well.
So what does this mean? Do you pass this blush pink fashion trend by? Of course it doesn't. Blush is such a pretty color that even I like it. I have never been a huge fan of pink, in general, which is ironic considering I use lots of it in my branding, but blush is such a sophisticated, warm and elegant pink that it is a shade I actually enjoy looking at. Additionally, like blush makeup, there are lots of different blush tones out there, from whisper soft ones to richer, more saturated hues. How to Wear Blush Pink Fashion
A few months ago, I wrote a post with general tips on how to make unflattering colors flattering to wear, which you can read here. But, speaking specifically about blush, here are some tips to keep in mind.
- Pair blush with flattering colors that look good on you. Blush pink may not be everyone's color but it works well with a lot of other shades. Try it with navy, chocolate, olive (gorgeous color combination), charcoal, black, burgundy, teal, emerald, and more to balance out the muted and washy qualities of blush. Blush is an accent shade that works with both warm and cool colors.
- Anchor the shade. The problem with blush is that it is usually too lofty and light. Imagine the color like a helium balloon that needs to be grounded. Pair it with dark colors to do this. This is especially important in work environments where light colors can come across as passive and weak.
- Choose blush accessories. Blush is gorgeous in accessories, like in handbags, shoes, belts and other leather goods. Instead of buying blush clothing, look to add blush in your accent pieces.
Below are five outfits using blush clothing and accessories along with more tips on how to wear the color this coming spring.
Outfit #1
This casual top from Anthropologie is pretty but it isn't exactly a color that will flatter most skin tones on its own. To anchor the lightness of the peachy blush shade, I used olive and grey using these pants from Boden, handbag from Vince Camuto and Nicole Miller scarf that has tones of grey and richer blush in it. The outfit is finished with this pair of earrings from Max & Chloe and rose gold flats from Zappos.com.

This spring coat from Modcloth is truly what inspired this post. I thought it was so pretty that I even sent a link to it to the client I was mentioning earlier. What I wanted to show through this outfit was how versatile a coat like this can be in this color. Here, I styled it with this scarf from Nordstrom, that is in shades of navy, turquoise, teal and aqua. I loved the way these colors work with the blush. With this navy dress from Reiss the outfit is ready to go to work with a pair of beige suede pumps from Jessica Simpson and bag from Coach, navy studs and simple gold necklace from Bauble Bar.

If blush is a flattering face color on you, you can still anchor the color (should you want to) by adding richer colors away from the face, like I did here with the shoes. The outfit is styled with a blush ribbon top from J. Crew, an ivory Ivanka trump blazer and grey Akris Punto skirt. The outfit is grounded with these burgundy pumps from Burberry and earrings from Max & Chloe. The outfit is finished with a grey handbag from Skagen.
As a casual top, like this blush one from Modcloth, is perfect for the weekends. If you love the color but it is too light for you, try adding a colorful necklace with richer tones to balance out the washy quality of the blush. Here I added this Stella & Dot bib and used the green found in it to add these Anthropologie sandals in mint. The outfit is casual with these jeans from The Gap and this richer blush bag from London Fog finishes the look.
Blush is a gorgeous evening color, especially if you are looking to step away from a classic after-five shade like black. While it is a beautiful color to look at, it's not a pretty color for everyone to wear. However, the beauty of blush is that a lot of other colors can be worn with it to make it more flattering. Take, for example, how I am styling this blush pink dress from J. Crew with a jeweled necklace from Bauble Bar that has teal and blush in it. It fills the neckline is beautifully, brings a richer and more flattering shade near the face and allows me to introduce these other accessories, like this clutch from Natasha Couture and peep toe pumps from Adrianna Papell.
