Creating a home network that lets your PS3 and laptop communicate with each other doesn’t take as much work as you might think. In fact, it’s fairly simple when you have the right instructions and you take time to set up the network correctly the first time.
Connecting the PS3 to a Network
If you have a PS3 with Wi-Fi capabilities, go to the consoles “Settings” and select “Network Settings.” This will show you several options. Choose Internet Connection Settings to find your home’s wireless router.
Hopefully you have some security that prevents your neighbors from accessing your wireless network. When prompted, type in your password to establish a connection between the PS3 and the existing wireless network. If you do this successfully, it should say “Enabled.”
Make sure your laptop is also connected to the wireless network. If you haven’t already, make sure that the files on your laptop are set to share with other devices. This will let you access movies, music, and other files through your PS3.
If Your PS3 Doesn’t Support Wi-Fi
Some PS3s don’t support wireless connectivity. If you can’t go the wireless route, then you will need to acquire wires to connect the devices.
There are two ways to do this. If you have a wired network in your home that runs through a router, you can connect the PS3 and laptop to the router with Ethernet cables. This will let you use the PS3 to access shared files on your laptop.
If you don’t already have a wired network, then you can connect the PS3 and laptop directly with a USB cable. You will need a USB cable that with two thin connectors (like the ones used to connect game controllers to the PS3). Many USB cables have a thin and thick side. Unfortunately, these won’t work.
You can also use these techniques to network desktop PCs, all in ones, and other devices to your TV.
Connecting the Network to Your TV
Many newly manufactured televisions have inputs that will let you connect to a home network. As long as you have a PS3, though, you don’t need to worry about this. The game console will essentially handle that part for you.
Your PS3 comes with an AV cable that has yellow, white, and red video in connectors on one side and an AV multi out connector on the other. This type of connection will give you good picture quality when you open files on your computer through the PS3.
If you would like to use a different type of connector, consider an HDMI cable, S video cable, or component AV cable. Each of these are sold separately, so you should do some research to help you decide which one matches your television best.
Reaping the Benefits
Now that you have networked your laptop, PS3, and television, you can view files from your laptop on your TV. That’s great if you have downloaded movies, pictures, and music. Running those files through your PS3 means that you get better quality by watching and listening to them on your home entertainment system.
