How To Maintain A Healthy Weight After The Age Of Fifty

Muscle loss starts after the age of thirty. The older a person gets the faster muscle loss occurs. Things become heavier, energy levels become lower and the metabolism starts to slow down. This is the aging process that we will all face. You can support a healthy weight after the age of fifty if you stay active.

Slow down the muscle loss process by engaging in a resistance program three times a week. The routine needs to target every major muscle group. You will only see results if you use proper for of the exercise. Proper form is more important than the weight being lifted. It is never too late to start a resistance workout. It is only too late if you do not start one. Muscle cells burn more calories than fat cells. A resistance program can slow down muscle loss or even build new muscle. By having more lean muscle mass you will be able to eat more without gaining fat. You will have more energy, better posture, be stronger, more toned and have a higher metabolism.

Weightlifting will have you burn more calories than just walking. Your metabolism will be higher for up to 48 hours after the workout. You will be burning more calories even at rest by lifting weights. Weightlifting is also important for increasing bone density. Cardio is good for the heart and lungs and should be included with your resistance routine.

A resistance workout should be performed on non consecutive days. A 24 hour rest period is important for recuperation. During the rest days cardio would be a good choice to stay active and burn off some extra calories.

Strive to get 150 minutes of physical activity a week for general health. If you are looking for weight loss you might need to increase the time.

Nutrition also plays an important role in maintaining a healthy weight. Be careful of the portions you are eating. Stay away from foods with added sugar. Replace them with fruits and vegetables. Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
