How to Know If You’re Dehydrated – and What You Can Do About It!

By Kenin Bassart @Constantramble

Drinking enough water has always been difficult for me. If I’m busy I can go hours upon hours without a drink, only to be so thirsty later in the day I’m gulping down water a full glass at a time. Why do I do this to myself?! It used to be common for me to get headaches during the day, which I would chalk up to be dehydrated. What I didn’t know is that those headaches were my body telling me that it was struggling!

Water is essential for your bodily functions, and when you aren’t providing your body enough it literally has to pick and choose which bodily functions to make a priority, leaving the rest compromised. Your body uses water for everything from regulating internal body temperature, metabolizing food, flushing waste and lubricating joints. Water allows cells to grow and and survive and carries oxygen throughout our bodies. Our bodies are made up of over 60% water, and many of our internal organs are comprised of an even greater percentage of water.

I think I’ve made my point – water is important! Not getting enough water can be detrimental to your health. In addition to the headaches that I’ve experienced, dehydration can lead to much more serious conditions such as seizures and comas. The graphic below from our friends at fix.com is a great resource to help you determine if you are dehydrated, and if you are what you can do about it.

Luckily, I’ve gotten much better about drinking water lately. I’ve started adding either drops of lemon essential oil or an appetite suppressing essential oil blend to my water and it makes my water much more tasty. I’ve found the “pinch test” below to be very helpful – something quick and easy you can do anywhere to check your hydration levels. Learn more below!
