Other than our milk teeth when we are children, we only get one set of pearly whites. We want them to stay just like that, don't we? Bright, sparkling clean and healthy. There are a few things that we can do to help our teeth along the way. It can cost a lot of money to repair if we do get any issues with our teeth. Problems with our gums can also lead to other health problems too. So start today to make sure that you update your oral health regime.

To start with the basics, you need to make sure that you are cleaning your teeth at least twice a day. A fluoride based toothpaste is best to make sure that your teeth remain strong. Be sure not to swallow any toothpaste, though! Brushing regularly kills bacteria and stops the acid from food and drink destroying the enamel on your teeth. The enamel is the 'coating' on your teeth and is what helps teeth to stay nice and bright white. If the enamel gets eroded, your teeth can become porous, like a sponge. Then they will absorb everything. Coffee and red wine on your teeth? Not a good look!

If you can't brush your teeth in between meals, then it is a good idea to chew sugar-free gum. It needs to be sugar-free as it would just be defeating the point if you chewed a lot of sugar near your teeth. The chewing causes saliva, and that helps to break down the acids in foods. Chewing gum is the next best thing to brushing your teeth, but it shouldn't replace it. You can read more about chewing gum at www.wrigley.com/uk/benefits-of-chewing.

Mouthwash is also a must for good oral health. When we are the ones brushing our teeth, there are spots that we will miss. Mouthwash gets to all of the harder to reach areas and washes away any other bacteria that might be on our teeth and gums. Flossing is a great addition too and is particularly good for the health of your gums.

There are a few things that are good to avoid if you want healthy, bright white teeth. Do you ever see many smokers with sparkly white teeth? Not often! If you smoke, it is a good idea to give it up. It can affect your health in many ways, one of which is the health of your teeth and gums.

It is a good idea for all of the family to have a good dental regime and look after their teeth. Children need to learn how to care for their teeth from an early age, or they can get several problems with their teeth and gums. If there are any issues, they might need to see an orthodontist. This shouldn't be a scary thing for them, though. To read more information about orthodontics, you can view it here at www.letssmiledental.com/fairfax-office/.
