How to Fray/update Your Old Jeans- a Diy

By Saumya Shiohare @myriadmusings1
Fringe/frayed hem denim is all over the runway and realway and I am pretty sure I am not the last one to jump on the bandwagon. A few others just as reluctant as me, might be waiting for someone to break the ice and give ideas to make this trend more wearable. Not only this, the hefty price tag of $$$ could be another reason keeping a lot of you ( including me )  from warming up to this trend.
As much as I was curious to try this trend, I wasn't willing to shell out big bucks for this fickle trend.  So instead of spending $$$ on a trendy pair of jeans, that I would have worn twice, may be thrice and then gotten bored and abandoned, I decided to make my own. Honestly, it was the easiest and most successful DIY I've ever done. Not the quickest one though, this DIY needs just a few things:
  • an old pair of jeans that still fits
  • a pair of scissors
  • a pair of tweezers

Steps going left to right :
1) The first step is crucial. this lays the foundation for the whole fraying process. Lay your jeans, legs together, flat on the floor and with the scissors snip off the hem. I took about an inch coz my jeans were already short, you could go higher up incase you like shorter hem jeans. Throw em in the dryer for about 15-20 minutes, result: frayed edges
2) Now legs overlapping, cut about 2-3 inches ( or more if you want longer fringes ) long and 2 inches wide strips along the deconstructed hemline.
3) Now begins the taxing part of the DIY.  Separate a strip and with your tweezers start pulling away the vertical ( along the leg line ) blue threads, these will be your final fringes so don't pull em out. As you've pulled down a few on both the edges, the white threads woven across will be exposed. Now start pulling these out. You want to get rid of the white weave completely, so repeat the pulling down and out action until you've reached the end of the strip and finished all the strips. It took me about and hour each leg, but the result was worth the effort and was hubs-approved too....!
