How To Do Hot Weather

By Winyeemichelle
Perhaps you’re headed off on an exotic getaway or maybe you’ve just moved to sunnier shores, or you’re a Brit in need of some advice in case of another impromptu heatwave. I’ve got you, girl. If there’s one thing I’m equipped with after my stint in beautiful Hong Kong, it’s how to do hot weather. Hong Kong is at heart a bustling city but it’s also home to 32 degree heat and some of the most incredibly suffocating humidity you’ll experience, hitting a solid 90% some summers. So, yes, I know how to handle hot weather ;)

The Fan Trick

Whilst it’s incredibly bad to sleep with a fan on overnight, sometimes the situation just calls for it. Make sure you pop your fan on timer if you have it (generally you just want to feel cool whilst you try to get to sleep) and then pop a frozen bottle of water in front of it to blow cool air as opposed to blowing more warm air around. Pop a placemat and/or bowl down too to avoid a puddle near your fan!

Thermal Face Sprays

I really enjoy using thermal face sprays throughout the summer. Despite the fact that they’re a bit of a gimmick, let’s face it, I do enjoy misting them on my face to re-energise, freshen up and stop my makeup from getting cakey. The Caudalie Beauty Elixir remains one of my favourites, as well as Caudalie’s Grape Water, but recently I don’t leave the house without a bottle of the Avene Thermal Spring Water. SO refreshing.

Choose Smart Clothing

When the summer arrived (in March lolol) in Hong Kong, my first port of call was Uniqlo for smart clothing that could adjust to the weather. Clothing in the UK is pretty much geared towards terrible weather and it’s not uncommon to spot raincoats on the rails through to August, so it’s not really a known thing that Uniqlo offer an AirTech range of clothing, simple basics that cool your body down when it’s impractically warm. It’s worth noting that they have a twin range called HeatTech designed to keep you warm when it’s cold!

Remember SPF

A common misconception through the summer is that you don’t have to wear SPF if you’re trying to tan or if it’s cloudy, but it’s important to wear SPF pretty much all through the year. I wear SPF 50 in the summer and scale it back to SPF 30 in the autumn/winter. Some of my favourites for the face are the Shiseido Expert Sun Protective Lotion (super lightweight and doesn’t feel sticky at all), the Clinique Mineral Sunscreen Fluid for Face (antioxidant) and this Sunblock Sun Milk by Missha. Skin safety is incredibly important, so please be sure not to skip this before makeup.

Carry Useful Products

When I lived in Hong Kong, I had a mini kit that I’d take with me no matter the occasion. A bottle of water was my first priority as you dehydrate much quicker in the sun (that heat!), whilst other essentials were a pack of pocket wet wipes, pocket tissues, hair ties and a little handheld fan. One of the quickest ways to cool down is to splash water on your wrists, but wiping them down with wet wipes will have a similar effect.
Happy summer heat!
