How I Started to Love EDM

By Thelostboylloyd @lloydthelostboy

Look at my playlist a couple of years ago, and you’d probably see the entire Billboard Hot 100 upload onto it. All my favorite songs were pop, mainstream, and whatever was playing over the radio. But see, I’ve gotten into the bandwagon of loving electronic dance music (EDM)—which was cultivated by traveling, partying, and sticking with Tattoo. Read more…

How I Started to Love EDM

I’ve liked EDM, even before when people were more familiar with its subtypes house and trance, yet I only liked a handful of popular songs—think Bonnie Bailey’s Ever After and David Guetta’s Sexy Chick. When I started traveling a lot here in the country and abroad though, I partied when there’s not really much to see in a particular place at night, and sure, little by little, I got exposed to club anthems. But I couldn’t care much about those back then—because after all, I go to parties not to rave but to socialize and have ‘fun.’

To cut the story short, I started to attend dance parties and concerts Tattoohas been holding for media and its subscribers. And these parties have been held in the coolest clubs and venues, and the hottest local and international DJs have been invited—thanks to one of Globe’s vice presidents for Tattoo, Dong Ronquillo. Regarded highly in local party circuits, he knows how to throw the biggest events—celebrities and all.

David Guetta, Alesso, Calvin Harris, Zedd, Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki, Cedric Gervais, and Kaskade are only some of the acts Tattoo has brought to our shores, and each time, our friends at Globe made sure that we, as well as its loyal subscribers, are invited each time.

And there are Tattoo dance concerts and events year-round! The last one I attended was during #LaBoracay2014 when they got Steve Aoki and Cedric Gervais—two internationally-acclaimed DJs. Not only was the party fun, of course, but it was the grandest and most well-attended event in Boracay with more than 2,000 of us partygoers.

Raving to all these DJs encouraged me learn about them individually and hence slowly imbibe the whole EDM thing. Now, each time I’m in cities and beaches like Kuala Lumpur and Boracay, I frequently scope for the hippest clubs with a great EDM beat. Plus, I fly miles just to attend big raves like Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance.

EDM for me has gone from ‘just OK’ to a fueled passion, and I’ve got Tattoo to thank a lot for it. I now party to have fun and to just get lost in the music—bobbing my head and putting my hands up mindlessly, even without getting inebriated at all. And play some instrumental EDM track—chances are, I probably know which DJ mixed or remixed it.

TREND TALKS BY TATTOO

Come May 30, 2014 (Friday), Tattoo is hosting Armin van Buuren’s Armin Only: Intense at the SM Mall of Asia Arena with Big Fish Manila. But this time, Tattoo is kicking things up a notch by encouraging more people to be passionate about EDM; they’re holding the first Trend Talks by Tattoo, 2:00 PM at the Solaire Grand Ballroom.

Among those invited to talk is one of the hottest names in Manila’s party scene today, DJ Mars Miranda, as well aS homegrown talent Nicky Jurado and businessman Stephen Ku. With top DJ Armin van Buuren leading the roster of speakers, the talk will not only discuss EDM trends but will also be a showcase of the latest beats in the genre from the DJs themselves.

If you’re wondering where I’ll be that Friday, unfortunately, I won’t be able to go. I’ll be chilling by a beach in Bohol—contenting myself with EDM tracks on Spotify using Tattoo’s GoSURF*. Sure, it’s going to be a party for one, but that’s the life of a traveler.
