How Did SAG Do? SAG Nominations Announced

Posted on the 10 December 2014 by Impsndcnma @impsndcnma

1415988054-cdn.indiewire-1The nominations for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG henceforth) were announced this morning. The big question is how did they do (I’m only covering the Film Department). I guess the answer is a little more complicated than originally anticipated. How did a sure-fire nomination for David Owelowo for his work in Selma not got selected? It seems that the film wasn’t finished on time and screeners weren’t sent to the voting body. Plus nobody bothered to go see the potential best film of 2014 in theaters. Director Ava DuVernay said as much on Twitter (seen here). So now we know why Selma wasn’t even considered, lets take a look at the other nominations….

Some of the biggest surprises are names that haven’t been showing up in critic circles thus far. While critics have loved Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, that field was considered too strong for him to make an appearance. In fact, each category had its own little surprise. In the supporting actor category, Robert Duvall got a nod for the dreadful film, The Judge. Jennifer Aniston got a mention for the little seen, Cake. Finally, Naomi Watts got a mention for her work in St. Vincent, which was a lot of fun.

Finally, the ensemble award seems a little at odds with itself. Considering the talent involved with films like Foxcatcher (2 noms) and Into the Woods (1 nom), wouldn’t make more sense to nominate either of those films instead of Grand Budapest? Grand Budapest has an amazing cast no doubt, but it just seems weird to only give it love there. Gone Girl should also be considered in any conversation of best ensemble, since top to bottom that film is casted wonderfully.
