Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey review (by Chris) I wasn't overly enthusiastic about seeing the Hobbit, even the trailers didn't really draw me in, and the negative reviews sealed the films fate in my eyes. My worst fears were realised when the critics moaned about the films over long running time and the slow pace. Fortunately, I decided to ignore them and I'm glad I did because the Hobbit is an excellent film with plenty of action and a fast pace. It wasn't what I expected at all. It is comparable to the Lord of the Rings trilogy as expected however it is more accessible than those films thanks in part to the light hearted nature of the young Bilbo Baggins.
The film is quite different from the book with some extra padding to help flesh out the book. It's fair to say that the writers did the right thing by adding to the story as the film feels more epic than the book as a result.  And it looks amazing, but I wouldn't expect any less from Peter Jackson. He has captured the beauty of the New Zealand countryside perfectly.
I enjoyed The Hobbit. It is an exciting tale with with a big heart at its core. The performances are spot on, although I felt that Freemen couldn't quite handle the more dramatic moments at times. He is in his element however during the light hearted moments.
I gave the film a second viewing and found it to be just as entertaining as the first time, although the padding out of the story became more apparant.  It didn' t bother me much as I found The Hobbit to be entertaining and well worth a watch or two.
