Helping Your Children Look After Their Teeth

We all know how important it is ensuring your children look after their teeth from a young age.  I’m sure all us parents also know how difficult it can be to get them to brush their teeth properly, especially when they are very young.

You may remember a little while ago I reviewed a chewable toothbrush with Little Miss A.  Well, now, thanks to Oasis Dental Care, I have received a box full of goodies to encourage and help Little Mr A with his teeth cleaning too!

Little Mr A has always been quite good at brushing his teeth and, on a recent visit to the dentist, he was told how good his teeth were.  He does, however, sometimes rush his teeth brushing if there is something more important he would rather be doing so we always have to stand with him and make sure he doesn’t rush!

He was also told he had two brand new, grown up teeth, coming through at the back of his gums so he was told he had to do a really good job brushing his teeth from now on and make sure he looked after these new adult teeth so this box couldn’t have come at a better time!

He has already opened the Spiderman toothbrush and is getting used to having an electric brush which has been ‘tickling’ his mouth!

In the box was also some great brushing tips which we shall be putting into practice…

  • Children should brush their teeth for two minutes at least twice a day - At home Little Mr A always does his teeth in the morning and before bed but I’m not sure he does them for 2 minutes a time so we shall be using a timer from now on to make sure!  Also, when he is at school, they are made to brush their teeth after lunch.
  • They should floss their teeth each day - It never occurred to me that Little Mr A should be flossing his teeth so we will be giving the floss a go (even though he is not sure about the Hello Kitty on them!)
  • Your child should use a soft brush and you should stand with them until they are around 7 to ensure they are brushing properly - I always ensure I buy Little Mr A an age appropriate toothbrush and we always change it once it starts to look well used!  One of us is always with him at the moment too to make sure he gets all of his teeth.
  • They should start at the end of one row of teeth and use light circular motions along the whole line before beginning on the other row.  Make sure they brush the front, back and top of each tooth. - I think this will be the hardest to implement.  Little Mr A has a very set way of brushing his teeth, including his ‘cheesy grin’ at the end!
  • Instead of rinsing their mouths after brushing, children should just spit out the toothpaste, leaving beneficial flouride from the toothpaste in their mouths. - Little Mr A never properly rinses his mouth out anyway so this should be an easy one to follow!
  • Always replace the whole family’s toothbrushes every three months, or after illness.  - I always make sure the children’s toothbrushes are replaced regularly, however, I am not very good at changing mine or Big Mr A’s!  I will have to make more of an effort to do everyone’s at the same time so no-one is forgotten!

We will be letting you know how we got on with the goodies at a later date, once we have had chance to give them all a good test out!
