Why does my baby wake during the night?
Getting your baby to sleep can be difficult in itself, getting them to sleep right through the night can seem impossible in the early weeks. There are many reasons why your baby wakes during the night, some of these reasons are easy to spot, others are not and when our baby constantly wakes during the night we are left feeling drained and frustrated and find it difficult to function.
Your baby maybe hungry, wet, soiled, has had enough sleep, feels unwell, suffered from a bad dream, be teething or for a whole long list of other reasons. Newborns can wake every 2-4 hours for a feed but this phase does not usually last too long and by 6 weeks you can begin to teach your baby to sleep, by introducing a routine.
Top Tips – Help Baby To Sleep All Night;
- Allow your baby to learn to fall asleep alone from a young age, without you holding/rocking them.
- Start a bedtime routine as early as possible with your baby, this can start from as early as 6 weeks old.
- Help baby learn the difference between night and day by making daytime fun, noisy and light and make bedtime more quieter, calmer and darker.
- A comforter can be a great asset to a baby, this can be a blanket, teddy bear, dummy or a toy specifically designed for this reason. If you use anything of fabric keep it close to you for a while as baby will be able to smell you on the item which will sooth them.
- Music can help your baby to sleep and stay asleep, you can use a cot mobile or even a radio to provide background noise if baby wakes easily from noises made in the house.
- If your baby is old enough and wakes during the night thirsty, have a drink within easy each.
- If a dummy helps your baby to sleep, have a spare one within reach as they always disappear when they are wanted.
- If your baby is waking early and it is light outside consider using blackout blinds or thicker curtains, to convince them it is still bedtime.
