Healthy up Your Hot Dogs

By Lindsayleighbentley @lindsayLbentley

Let’s be honest.

Hot dogs are delicious.

But most are filled with fillers, preservatives, and by-products that contribute to a host of illnesses from diabetes and obesity to childhood leukemia.

So, I buy ours from a local farmer at the farmer’s market, or get the Applegate Farms “Organic All-Beef Hot Dogs”.  They are uncured, and made from grass-fed beef, with no fillers or by-products, and are nitrate free.

Nitrates are the part of processed meats that make them carcinogenic, so be sure to get ones that are nitrate/nitrite free!

We don’t have them often, but they are fun for a quick lunch or dinner.

A few days ago I made them and heaped on an ample amount of my homemade sauerkraut, and homemade fermented beets with bread & butter pickles.

A side of steamed green beans and carrots rounded out the meal.

It was delicious!

What is your favorite way to “health-up” junk food?

live well. be well.
