Healing Home Foods: Raw & Vegan

By Yonni @vegandthecity
Healing Home Foods: Raw & Vegan I recently posted about a farmers market I found in Bedford at John Jay Homestead, just a 5 minute drive from my home.  I went because I had been told about Healing Home Foods, founded by Shelley Schulz, who was making vegan and raw foods, practically in my back yard, and I wanted very much to give them a try.
Here is Shelley's story:
"I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years but after my son Jackson was diagnosed with Autism, I began a renewed relationship with food that involved my whole family.  Jackson responded positively and so did his younger sister Katie to a regimen of organic, gluten-free, raw & vegan foods with variations on those themes.  When my husband John was diagnosed a year later with cancer, it made me dig deeper into using food to help heal.  I use fresh, wholesome and local ingredients that I carefully source on an ongoing basis.  This approach allows me to make delicious foods that can heal as well as taste great to both children and adults.  All my food is gluten free, most are raw and vegan as well.  I buy from trusted vendors and enjoy being part of the local food culture.  Eating this way can help provide optimal health so that we feel good in our Healing Home."
Having sampled quite a few items on my first visit, I subsequently purchased a number of them, and was lucky enough to get some samples from Shelley of others to try.  Over the course of two weeks I had:
Raw Flax Crackers: walnutty zucchini, tomato and basil and herbed (my son who didn't even want to try them finished them all!)
Granolas (some raw, some baked): pistachio, goji berry, citrus, almond, peanut butter
Macadamia Nut Hummus
Smoothies (a healthy fruit leather): Banana-strawberry and Banana-strawberry-coconut
Overall, I thought there was consistency and integrity to each of the products.  I really liked the flavors and even felt guilty at times as they seemed to tasty to be good for you!  I will definitely be back now that my supply has run out.
