Has the Ghostbusters Costume Basically Stayed the Same Over the Years? – An Infographic

What's with the stripes?

That was one of the main reactions last year when director Paul Feig took a break from filming and posted the first photo of the new Ghostbusters in costume. We've had months to get used to it by this point, but back then it was kind of jarring. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Katie McKinnon and Leslie Jones' Ghostbusters wear nearly identical costumes to their male predecessors except their jumpsuits have bright orange and white stripes across the chest and on their boots. WTF?

Of course, I now have to pause and make the obligatory reference to the other kind of reaction people had to the costumes...

Oh, screw it. Not doing it. I am so tired of reading, talking or writing about the sexist backlash against the new Ghostbusters. For the purposes of this post, all I care about is the evolution of the Ghostbusters costumes because the nice people at halloweencostumes.com were kind enough to send me this handy dandy infographic breaking down the evolution of the Ghostbusters.

But wait - there's more. The infographic also includes fun little trivia items for each film as well as the animated series.

Sidenote: I dig how they drew Ghostbusters in the same exact pose from iteration to iteration, particularly the same crooked pose for Spengler and the way it carried over into Holtzman in the new cast.

Lesson of the day? When you have created what Hollywood likes to call a highly toyetic intellectual property but you have your main characters wearing jumpsuits there are only so many ways you can change things up and keep those toy manufacturers happy. You can alter the color of the jumpsuit or maybe add some racing stripes, but at the end of the day a jumpsuit is a jumpsuit. Of all the ones the Ghostbusters have worn, I am partial to the originals from 1984, the least flashy and most straight-forward of the bunch. What's your favorite?
