Harvest Festival. The time of year when the children file in to the local church armed with shoe boxes crammed with a selection of groceries which Mummy has fished out of the back of the cupboard at the last minute.
I can remember this exact same ritual from my own childhood. Mum would buy an extra can of tomato soup, a bottle of shampoo and some Ambrosia rice pudding and we would neatly arrange the items in a ‘there’s more here than it may seem’ display in order to fill the space. Straw or tissue paper helped.
We sang traditional songs and marvelled at the vast arrangement of vegetables which surrounded the altar. Remember corn dollies? I can recall making them in preparation for this annual occasion (badly); a nod to the days of yore no doubt, when the harvest was really about thanks for the harvest.
These days the children bring toiletries for the homeless, and they discuss the wonder of our planet and everything in it. But we still sing ‘All things bright and beautiful’ and I still know all the words. I love that some things never change.
