Creative Budgeting Puts That Dream Vacation Within Reach

Moms have it tough, especially during the long months of summer vacation.  The kids are home for a while, lying around the house getting bored, and you’re still working your 40-hour job to make ends meet.  How do you find time for yourself?  How do you find the time – not to mention the money – to get out of the house with the kids and take that much needed family vacation?

budgeting for single momsIf money is a concern for you, as it is for many American families, now might be the perfect time to start getting creative with different ways to earn and save this summer.  Before you know it, you’ll be able to afford that great family getaway you’ve been hoping for.

Here are four ideas to start you off:

Dump the Bottled Water

We all need to stay hydrated throughout the day, but many of us don’t realize just how wasteful buying bottled water really is.  In addition to being environmentally unfriendly, bottled water can also be terribly expensive, especially if you buy it regularly.

A great way to save some money at the grocery store is to switch to a Brita filter (or something similar) and start using tap water for your hydration needs.  Buy a water bottle to take along with you when you leave the house, and while you’re out, take advantage of water fountains.  You’ll be amazed at how quickly the savings add up.

The World Is Your Gym

Being a single mother, you may be concerned that your fitness has fallen by the wayside while you’ve been looking after the kids.  If you’re looking for a way to stay in shape without paying for costly gym memberships, think simple!

There are plenty of ways to stay trim in the great outdoors: go for a walk around the neighborhood or go hiking at a local park.  If strength training is more your thing, visit a local thrift store and pick up some cheap weights to keep around the house.

Staying fit doesn’t have to be expensive.

Sell Old Stuff

Here’s one more tip for making some extra money. If you find yourself surrounded with household clutter or things you don’t think you’ll ever need to use again, have a garage sale and sell it!  Whatever it is – furniture, old toys the kids don’t want anymore or clothes they’ve outgrown – chances are good someone else can make good use of it.

If you don’t want to have a garage sale, consider selling your items on EBay. This is a great way to bring in some extra money while keeping your home free from clutter.

Dog Boarding

Dog boarding is a terrific way for the dog lover to bring in a little extra cash.  Lots of people out there avoid boarding their pets at a kennel because they’d rather leave them with somebody who they trust to take the best care of their beloved pet.  If you’ve got the space and the disposition, consider taking care of a few dogs over the summer by dog boarding.

It’s a great way to get some exercise while you enjoy man’s (make that woman’s!) best friend.  If the kids are home for the summer, have them pitch in!  It’s a great way to get them out of the house and get some exercise.

As you can see, these are just a few of the many creative ways available to you for saving and making money.  By spending just a little more time budgeting wisely, you’ll see your savings growing in no time, moving you closer and closer to that family vacation that you all need and want.
