Welcome to our very first short movie compilation. I scoured internet to bring you some of the coolest and most impressive fantastic and sci-fi short stories you’ll ever watch. These shorts are highly popular and they inspire others to work on movies, short or full length. Some of them even got picked up by big movie companies to be made into a live-action feature in impressive six figure deals. So let’s get this show started, we’ll have lots to talk about later.

It seems like we are never bored of zombies and zombies became a defining entity of today. So what special thing do we have for those undead, for death itself? Do we secretly desire it or we don’t think it’s something to be feared anymore? Before we go too deep in this, let me present you our first pick for impressive short movies. Cole Schreiber’s Rest.
After Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 1978, zombies have cultured a devout following. It’s a genre that, never seems to go out of “fashion” with movies/TV shows/Comics/Novels that come out every couple of years that redefine the genre (28 Days Later, The Walking Dead etc.).
Now, a short film, Rest by Cole Schreiber, approaches the undead from a different angle. Cole is a California based writer, director, and visual effects artist, working in commercials, music videos, and film.
One astronaut’s journey through space and life ends on a hostile exosolar planet. Grounded is a metaphorical account of the experience, inviting unique interpretation and reflection by the viewer.
Conceived and created by Kevin Margo, VFX industry veteran and CG supervisor at acclaimed blur studio, in collaboration with Barrett Meeker, this short film represents an investigation into the live action medium as a more intimate and efficient vehicle for realizing visions and ideas of a personal nature…an expression with greater immediacy, purity, and volume typically absent in an all CG approach.
Grounded in a multi-awarded sci-fi short that travels into themes of aging, inheritance, paternal approval, cyclic trajectories, and behaviors passed on through generations are explored against an ethereal backdrop. It was chosen among the Official Selections for festivals like 2012 LA Shorts, 2012 Madrid International Film Festival, 2012 ÉCU – The European Independent Film Festival and 2012 Sci-Fi-London.
“Sight” is the technological interface for one’s eyes in the movie. It is a networked platform that superimposes the virtual data on one’s surroundings. The system also intensely integrates “gamification” of everyday life. Here, we follow one individual’s routine utilizing the technology. Does the constant influx of information help or hurt his chances of human connection?
Drawing upon current trends in social internet and gaming such “achievements” and “XP points”, the Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo provide a superfluity of examples for what this technology is capable of.
“I’m a video game geek and Eran is a film buff, and we both have a passion for sci-fi and technology,” Lazo wrote in an email to VentureBeat. “At first we were set on making a film that had augmented reality in it. We did some research, delved into every kind of augmented tech out there today, and somewhere along the way we thought ‘Hey, I wonder how augmented reality would be like without the device or apparatus barrier. What if we could just SEE augmented reality?’ So we kind of tried to envision the world and how it would act after this kind of technology is standard, and it rolled on from there.”
