Six out of ten people say they would not feel comfortable asking their next-door neighbour for a cup of sugar.
And one in ten doesn't even know their name, according to a survey of 2,000 UK adults by social network Nextdoor, which launches today.
Only a third of UK adults believe their neighbourhood is a real community.
Most people said the neighbourhoods of their childhoods felt safer than those in 2016.
Nextdoor spokesman Nick Lisher said: "In a country that some worry has become more divided, the yearning to come together to create better neighbourhoods is stronger than ever.
"Nextdoor is already making it easier for neighbours to find lost pets, borrow power tools, share home-grown fruit and vegetables, and organise get-togethers."
The poll found that only 34% of people feel their neighbourhood is community minded.
Scotland emerged as the keenest to get to know neighbours better while Wales has the most neighbours who are already considered friends by the people next door.
A fifth said they were too shy to start a relationship with a neighbour with only slightly less (19%) worried they'd be seen as nosy if they struck up a conversation.
