Going It Alone

By Bescot Banter @BescotBanter
Walsall manager Dean Smith today announced he will not be appointing an assistant-manager, a role that has been vacant since his permanent appointment in April, there had been several names touted for the vacant position including amongst others; former West Brom and Birmingham City striker Kevin Philips, and former Saddlers manager Chris Nicholl, who along with club Physio Jon Whitney have been acting as an advisor's to Smith, positions which they'll both keep along with their other roles at the club.
The decision not to appoint an assistant can be seen as a risky one, but with the experienced Nicholl as right-hand man there will be plenty of knowledge and advice available for Dean to fall on, although he's hardly struggling in the job so far. Before the departure of Chris Hutchings and Martin O'Connor Walsall had spiralled into the relegation zone and showed very little desire and belief they could rescue themselves, since his appointment confidence in the squad and the supporters has rocketed, performances massively improved and the club experienced a reversal of fortunes which ultimately resulted in them avoiding relegation.
With pre-season training just a week away lets hope Smith can build on last seasons heroics and help the club avoid the relegation battle altogether.
