Last week I wrote about the action you can take for Childhood Cancer Awareness month. Because we’re all aware, but what we need more than awareness is action. I had been trying to think of the best ways that I could take action. Of course donating to Cancer research is the easiest way. Going to Chili’s night this month in a few weeks. But I always do that. I figured there has to be more that I can do.

So I took the plunge. I am shaving my head for St. Baldrick’s. A childhood Cancer foundation which provides grants to researchers who are researching Childhood Cancer. I have less than 2 months now to raise $5000 before I go and shave my head.

Yes, I am shaving my head for this! No, none of my children have or have had Cancer. No children in my immediate family have or have had Cancer. The closest it has touched me is through a friend of mine. Thankfully her daughter is in remission. I’m not doing this for anyone I know NOW. I am doing this for the future. I am doing this because we never know when it could be OUR CHILDREN. I hope it never is, but if it is I would hope that my children would have the best care possible at their disposable. With the latest in research making those Cancer’s with low survival rates have better odds. I want my kids and my kids kids someday to have better odds of survival on the off chance that they could end up with Cancer. I don’t want to sit back and take action when it touches me personally, I want to take action before it touches me personally.

My family is having a hard time with this. My children don’t want me to shave my head, my husband is concerned about the reactions I will get since I already often have to deal with people asking me what happened to my face (because of my Roseacea). I know they care about me and they just don’t want anyone saying anything negative about me, but Cancer patients don’t get that choice. It is only hair and it will grow back.

So I’m taking a leap of faith this year on my birthday, November 2, 2013 I will shave my head. And you can donate to this as well by visiting my page for St. Baldrick’s.

Then for the next several months I get to experiment with a new look. Bandanas and hats galore to cover my head. I must admit, the idea of doing this really does freak me out. I have never had short hair before. I don’t know what my head looks like. At this point I flip flop between this is going to be so freeing and I’m completely nuts.

I will not give up though. I will shave my head on November 2. I will raise $5000 for childhood Cancer research. I will do my part to make a difference. And I hope you will help me accomplish this.

So here’s my weekly reminder to take action against childhood Cancer. Please donate to my fundraiser. It is safe and secure and you can be assured that all funds will go directly to its intended charity to help provide grants to researchers of children’s Cancer.
