Go for Broke: Kill La Kill

Go For Broke

Kill la Kill is an anime that has totally nothing to do with its title, maybe except for the kill part. (No, seriously, I need an explanation about the title…) Kill la Kill is an anime where life fibers give super powers to clothes and sometimes they even become life forms. In this strange world we follow Ryuuko Matoi as she is looking for the murderer of her father and starts a new life in the Honnouji school.

Kill la Kill

Now though, if the story of Kill la Kill has nothing to do with its title, it has barely anything to do with my summary. It is still true but Kill la Kill is so much more than that.

To start with, Kill la Kill is not your average school life anime. First, it appears that the President of the Student Council is someone dangerous, so are everyone else in this school. Second, it appears that she mercilessly rule over both the city and the school. Kiryuin Satsuki is that awesome. Last but not least, it also happens that she might have something to do with Ryuuko’s father death.

It makes for instant rivalry. Actually, they want to kill each other as soon as they meet.

A lot of things will happen between them but I won’t say a thing.

The thing I found strange with Kill la Kill is that they spent the whole anime or nearly, fighting against various people using the power of their uniforms made of life fibers, and usually, it is something I find incredibly boring. Yet, the fights didn’t do that to me. I’ll be honest and say that I skipped a few, no matter how I look at it, there were too many fights, but overall I found them rather entertaining.

The best thing about this anime is probably its depth. I know I just said it was full of fights everywhere but it touched on many other subjects and there were always a few hints or revelations thrown in every episode. It took great care of unfolding its story in a way that wouldn’t be boring for the viewer. And, despite my low tolerance for fights, ended up looking forward to the new episode every week.

I still can’t say the story was anything ground breaking, at least for me, it was interesting and well done but that’s about it.

I quite liked all the characters. My favorite being obviously Mako for her cheerfulness and her naiveté. She was voiced by Aya Suzaki, a definite good choice, she managed cute and dumb perfectly well.

(I totally ship her with Gamagoori by the way…)

I also found myself to quite like Ryuuko. She is a bit brute and rough around the edges but she is strong-willed and definitely a bit soft. Again, her seiyuu (Ami Koshimizu) was a wonderful choice.

Satsuki on the other hand, was misunderstood for most of the anime and I found that it had a bad effect on my liking of the character, I regret that a bit. She was voiced by Ryôka Yuzuki.

Last but not least, I should mention Senketsu because Senketsu might be a uniform but I find he deserves his place as a real character in the show. The always supportive and caring Senketsu who needed Ryuuko’s blood to really fight to the best of his capabilities was pretty cute. I also found his seiyuu (Toshihiko Seki) pretty hot but that’s another matter entirely.

Konishi Katsuyuki was also there as a member of Nudist Beach and if that isn’t sounding hot, then I don’t know what is. (His voice there kinda reminded me of Simon’s, I found that pretty nice.)

I really liked Kill la Kill, despite the fanservice and the fights (which were as pretty looking as a fight can be). Kill la Kill gets my seal of approval. The following two tabs change content below.
