Without a doubt, Gary Clark Jr. (@garyclarkjr) is one of the most impressive acts I’ve seen or heard in quite some time. Masterfully blending the grit and soulfulness of blues with the crooning flow of R&B, his authenticity is undeniable. Clark was born to play blazing solos, craft incredible tones on his guitar and, at the age of only 28, sing with the soul of an old Delta blues man. Hailing from Austin, Gary Clark Jr. is catching ears and gaining some very well deserved attention.
Last week, I was lucky enough to catch Clark at Rockwood, the perfect, intimate venue for his impassioned performance. With what appeared to be over 100 people left waiting outside for the free show, Stage 2 was more packed than I had ever seen it. What followed was over an hour of soul stirring blues from the guitar prodigy, and based on the audience’s reaction, I wasn’t alone in my astonishment. Not to mention, you know someone’s a real player when Questlove gives them a standing ovation. Just sayin’.
Gary Clark Jr. will play a few more Northeast dates before heading back down South in early September. I highly recommend you make the trek if your city isn’t on the list below — he may come back, but the venues will be larger and the tickets much more expensive.
