"Salazar, Cole set to face off in rubber game
By John McGonigal / MLB.com | + 2 COMMENTS
Gerrit Cole, who leads the National League in wins and boasts a 2.20 ERA, has held firm this season when facing hitters with runners in scoring position -- a trend he'll look to continue against the Indians at 1:35 p.m. ET Sunday at PNC Park.
Cole has held hitters to a modest overall batting average of .240 this year, but he's been especially tough to solve with ducks on the pond. With runners in scoring position, the 24-year-old ace is holding hitters to a .195 batting average.
Meanwhile, Cole's counterpart -- Indians starter Danny Salazar -- has fared well when facing those situations, as well. The 25-year-old, who totes a 7-3 record and 3.80 ERA, has kept hitters in check with a .218 opponent's batting average with runners in scoring position.
Things to know about this game
Josh Harrison could be in for more extra-base hits. Opening the game's hitting on Saturday, Harrison's leadoff double was his fifth two-bagger in his past 21 games. He added another double in the sixth.
It also ensured that the third baseman has hit safely in 12 of his past 14 Interleague contests.
• Cole has never faced the Indians and has a history against just one current Cleveland hitter: Brandon Moss.
In three at-bats, Moss, a former Pirate, hit a home run off Cole on July 10, 2013, at PNC Park when he was with Oakland.
• Salazar, too, hasn't pitched against Sunday's opposition, but he has notably struggled in Interleague play.
In five starts against National League opponents, Salazar owns a 4.18 ERA and an 0-2 record.
