Frugal Tip: Make-Your-Own Sore Throat Syrup

By Catherine Mcdiarmid-Watt @frugalfreebies
Image: Preparing for Winter...Summer is almost over, and there is a chill in the air, so it's not hard to think of the cold season coming soon. And with it - coughs, colds and sore throats.
My suggestion is to get some chewable vitamin C and take several a day!
Preparing for Winter...Sore throat syrup.
Mix together honey, lemons, and ginger. You can leave the lemon rind on.
How Much? Do it in layers.... a layer of sliced lemon, cover with honey, another layer of lemon, cover with honey. That should give you the right proportions.
Ginger: For strong flavor, add one thin slice of ginger to 5 slices of lemon. For not as strong, use a 1/10 ratio.
How Long? Let sit for about 48 hours in your fridge. The longer it sits, the more flavorful it will become.
Storage: Store in your fridge, and it will keep forever.
To Use: Spoon into hot water for a tea to soothe throat.
Or take a spoonful right from the jar for a sore throat!
This would make a lovely gift - for holidays, or for a sick friend!

Bruce Beaty posted: I use whiskey, lemon juice, salt and honey for a cough. For a sore throat, I gargle with very warm water, salt, and iodine followed by a shot of said cough syrup.
Philip E. McRae posted: Peppermint, honey, lemon juice and whiskey works too! Long peppermint sticks, 1/4 cup honey, 1/4 cup lemon juice in a pint jar and fill to the top with any brand of whiskey. Keep refrigerated until all the peppermint is melted. Stir well and take a tablespoon full at a time, or a big gulp!
