Friday Fitness Check In

By Debi Lantzer @debiL1611

Hi everyone! I haven’t posted in a bit on a personal level, and I thought it was about time to keep everyone current with what’s going on in my life. I also haven’t been posting about training.  The great news is that while I haven’t been posting, I have actually been training.

At the beginning of this year, I signed up for a local boot camp. It is a two-month “challenge” and it started the first week of January. While I was totally committed to this plan of action, I was a bit leery for several reasons: (1) I could really stand to lose about 50 pounds; (2) I’m 56 years old and haven’t really been fit in about 9 years; and (3) I was in a near fatal car accident in 2012 (see “My Story“). That being said, I figured all I had to do to change everything is to, well, change everything.

The tricky part of this boot camp was to also incorporate some running time.  I need to build up for several local races, and ultimately the weekend of May 20 and 21, 2017, I’ll be heading up to Cleveland, Ohio for my annual “race-cation” for the 40th anniversary 2017 Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon series. This year I’ll be participating in the 8K on Saturday and the half marathon on Sunday.  I’m also blessed to be an official Race Ambassador for the race for my third year running too! I’m pretty excited because they’ve changed the course this year for the half marathon, making it flatter (which will also make it faster I hope).  I started running in Florida so all those hills and mountains up north are way more than I’m used to, so I’m very happy about this change.  And hey, running on the shoreway wasn’t a big draw for me anyway!

When I get home from Ohio, I’ll need to keep on pushing, because this year I’ll be doing the Inaugural Weeki Wachee Springs Mermaid Half Marathon back in Florida on September 23, 2017. The race is at a State Park where they actually have a mermaid show! Can you believe? I’m sure it’s going to be a fun race too! I don’t know all the details right now, but I’ll be keeping you posted as the date draws nearer!

So yeah, back to training – the minimum visits to the gym are 3 (with a maximum of 6), so I’ve been trying to maintain 3 days of gym with 3 days of running with Brodie, my 1 year old Parson Russell Terrier.  I haven’t been perfect of course, but I’ve been consistently showing up and doing the best I can.  I’m one of the oldest people participating in the boot camp 8 week challenge, and that makes me kinda proud of myself right now.

I’m not going to itemize each gym visit and each run, but I’m going to tell you that on the first day of boot camp, I was weighed and measured.  After 30 days, they re-weighed me and re-measured me and here are my results:

  • Total scale weight lost: -9 scale lbs.
  • Total fat lost: -4 lbs.
  • Muscle gained: +1 lbs.
  • Total percent body fat lost: -1%
  • Total inches lost:
    • -4 Arm
    • -2 Chest
    • -2 Waist
    • -2 Hips
    • -1 Thigh
    • -1 Calf

And in case those numbers aren’t meaning much, here’s a picture that shows the results:

Friday Fitness Check In I’ve dropped a few more pounds since this picture, but I won’t lie – February isn’t going as well as January.  That’s not going to stop me though, I have too many plans for my #bestyearEVER!!!

I’ll catch up with you next week and provide you with an update on my fitness journey!
