Black Magic cocktail

Try a little old time magic with a Black Magic cocktail!

Halloween’s approach may just put in the mood for this classic cocktail, appearing in the 1964 edition of the Mr. Boston De Luxe Official Bartender’s Cocktail.  I like to think it may date back to the time of the 1942 song, “That Old Black Magic”, but that’s pure speculation on my part.

As seems to be the case nowadays, there are a few variations of this cocktail.  I advise against the use of any sour mix for it.  Below is the classic recipe, followed by my own twist.

What you’ll need:  Vodka, Coffee Liqueur, and Lemon Juice

Add cubed ice to an old fashioned (or rocks) glass.  Then pour in an 1 1/2 vodka (use your favorite brand), one ounce of Kahlua (or other coffee-flavored liqueur), and add in a dash or two of lemon juice.  Stir gently and serve.  Optionally garnish with a twist of lemon peel.

How I like it:  For a little extra magic, add in an ounce of coffee and up the lemon juice to a teaspoon’s worth.  The coffee can be brewed fresh, but don’t pour it immediately.  Although it’s unlikely to melt the ice too much.  These added ingredients give an old time cocktail new life and heighten the flavors.  Lemon juice might be a strange accompaniment to coffee, but it surprisingly works.

It’s not just coffee, so drink responsibly!
