Fresh Food on the Go: French Meadow Cafe and Bakery at MSPFinding fresh food while traveling can be hard enough. Fast food joints proliferate along the interstate. Airports aren’t much better. When there’s less than a half hour until boarding, the options for quick food are often less than healthy and fresh, let alone organic.

Enter French Meadow Cafe and Bakery in the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport. At the junction of The Mall (no, not the Mall of America) and Concourse E, French Meadow Cafe and Bakery is an airport outpost of the Minneapolis restaurant that has been serving organic fare for more than a quarter century. The restaurant also features local ingredients when possible, but given the long winters in the upper Midwest, this can prove challenging.

According to their website, French Meadow Bakery “is the longest continuously running certified organic bakery in the US.” Their outpost in the airport offers a wealth of fresh foods, including a cranberry-walnut salad with blue cheese that is a refreshing change of pace as compared to the typical airport options.

All manner of fast food chains have made strides toward healthier offerings including McDonald’s recent kids’ meal change. These offerings represent an important component of long term health and well being, both of which are integral to sustainability. While fresh foods that are picked at the height of the season may cost more, there are other options (like flash freezing fruits and vegetables) and including them in meals when possible. When traveling, keep an eye out for options such as French Meadow.
