THIS year's Cinemalaya offers a bounty of free movies to audiences at the 12th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival on August 5-14, 2016 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
Leading the list of festival events that are free to the public is the opening ceremony of Cinemalaya on August 5, 6 p.m. to be followed by the Gala Premiere of 1-2-3 by Carlo Obispo at the CCP Main Theater.
Other free screenings include Japanese films Ken and Kazu by Hiroshi Shoji and August in Tokyo by Ryutaro Nakagawa will be featured in the Visions of Asia section of the Cinemalaya Festival under the partnership of Cinemalaya and Eiga Sai Japanese Film Festivals. Ken and Kazu will open the festival's Visions of Asia section on August 6, 6:15 pm at the CCP Little Theater and will be screened again on August 10 at 3:30 pm at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute. August in Tokyo will be shown on August 9, 6:15 pm and August 12, 3:30 p.m. at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute. Admission is free.
Admission is likewise free for the film screenings of the 17 minute short film by Lav Diaz Ang Araw bago ang Wakas on August 13 at 10 a.m., 10:40 a.m. and 11:30 am at the Tanghalang Manuel Conde; film finalists of the Ika-28 Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video and Competition, considered the longest-running independent film competition in Asia, on August 6-9, at the CCP Tanghalang Manuel Conde (Dream Theater); the Cinemalaya Institute Showcase of short features produced by the institute's basic filmmaking class; and the festival closing film Ang Hapis at Himagsik ni Hermano Puli by Gil M. Portes on August 13, 9 p.m. at the CCP Main Theater.
Meanwhile, the Green Carpet Screening section of Cinemalaya, featuring Lakbay2Love by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil, will be offered on a Pay-What-You-Can scheme. With a suggested donation of Php 50, audiences will get a chance to win a brand new bicycle. The Green Carpet Screening is set on August 13, 7 p.m. at the CCP Front Lawn. Finally, the public is invited to attend the Cinemalaya Awards Night on August 14, 7 p.m. at the CCP Main Theater.
Cinemalaya is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, the Cultural Center of the Philippines in partnership with Ayala Malls Cinemas. Established in 2005, Cinemalaya is an all-digital film festival and competition that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers.
Cinemalaya will also be held in Ayala Theaters in Greenbelt 3 and Glorietta, Makati, Fairview Terraces, TriNoma, and UP Town Center, Quezon City and Solenad, Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. In Cebu, Cinemalaya will be held at the Ayala Center Cebu on August 9-14.
To date, Cinemalaya has supported and promoted the production of 127 full feature independent films and 106 short films. Many of these films have won awards in local and international competitions and festivals. Through the annual festival, Cinemalaya has showcased over 1,000 works by independent filmmakers including full feature films, shorts, documentaries, Filipino film classics, and art films.
