Former U.S. Senator and longtime Hollywood actor Fred Thompson passes away

Fred Thompson, former U.S. Senator and longtime Hollywood actor who starred in films like Die Hard 2 and The Hunt for Red October, and was known prominently for his role as D.A. Arthur Branch  in a number of Law and Order TV series, passed away peacefully today in Tennessee after battling lymphoma.

Thompson removed himself from Hollywood from 1994 to 2003 to serve in the Senate. Thompson was also an attorney and was appointed minority counsel for the Republican Senators who were on the Watergate Committee.

Thompson was 73.
