Job Description:

CLASS TITLE: Firefighter/EMT or Paramedic

ACCOUNTABLE TO:  Fire Captain, Fire Lieutenant, or as assigned

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:  Under supervision, responds to various emergencies to protect life and property; trains in the use of and operates firefighting and rescue equipment.  Performs first aid or Paramedic duties as certified. Participates in fire prevention programs, fire code inspections, pre-fire planning, public education programs, hazardous materials response, station and vehicle maintenance, and associated training activities.  Work varies requiring individual judgment within prescribed standards and procedures.  Must meet residency requirement of 15 miles from the fire department.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES ARE: Responds to fire, rescue, medical, and other emergency calls.  Assists in the suppression of fires including rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, and salvage/overhaul work. Performs first aid or Paramedic duties as certified. Ensures that the Incident Management System is implemented on emergency responses.  May serve as Incident Commander. As training progresses, on occasion may drive and operate fire department equipment as required. Assists in the suppression of fires and in the protection of life and property. Ensures readiness for further alarms. Assists in cleaning and maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, fire station, and grounds. May assist in the investigation of fire scenes. Participates in continuing and advanced training programs and drills, including rescue and hazardous materials response.  Assists in performing fire inspections and pre-fire planning.  Assists in periodic testing of fire pumps, hose, ladders, and other equipment.  Performs minor mechanic duties.  Trains and maintains good physical condition.  On scheduled call back days wears personal cellular phone with Active 911 application and is subject to call back.

OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE: This position requires substantial contact with the public and fellow employees. Duties occasionally require heavy physical work, contact with undesirable physical conditions, and hazards requiring constant safety considerations.  Individual prepares records and reports of activities performed.  Occasionally works with information restricted to specific persons for a limited time; uses equipment requiring care to assure against breakdown or deterioration; occasionally handles small amount of funds; assists with fire code inspections; kitchen and laundry duties; answers public inquiries; conducts station tours; performs related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION ? RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:  Usually none.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or GED equivalent; at least 18 years of age; possession of a valid State of Kansas driver’s license; must obtain a Kansas non-commercial Class B driver’s license within 120 days of hiring; current Kansas Paramedic certification or current Kansas EMT certification and currently enrolled in an accredited Paramedic program with Paramedic certification within 6 months of hire date, ACLS certified, PALS certified, PHTLS required within 6 months of hire date, current national Fire Fighter I certification preferred, and CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) card preferred.

EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Responds to alarms and fires promptly, effectively and efficiently;  performs proper and effective fire suppression and rescue work;

Responds to medical calls requiring the application of advanced life support procedures and techniques used to minimize the loss of life while operating under emergency and/or hazardous conditions.  Directs other personnel on ambulance responses.  Administers emergency medical treatment properly and effectively; demonstrates ability to learn and apply effective medical protocols for a wide variety of medical situations;

Maintains good physical condition and agility; demonstrates the ability to work long hours without rest;

Understands and uses equipment and fire suppression methods properly and effectively;

Effectively cleans, maintains, and tests equipment, apparatus, and facilities;

Performs proper and effective fire prevention inspections;

Attends training sessions regularly and applies knowledge gained in the field;

Demonstrates logic, memory and reasoning skills by gaining, maintaining and applying current knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry, and mechanics to fire fighting, vehicle and apparatus repair, rescue, emergency medical care, inspection, and hazardous material response; makes sound judgments under stressful conditions;

Ability to perform heavy physical work and ability to lift over 100 pounds and to lift and carry 100 pounds; ability to move a person weighing over 200 pounds; ability to carry hose while wearing breathing apparatus;

Understands and follows oral and written instructions; ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, crawl, ride, push, pull and perform a variety of similar body movements;

Possesses hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to operate a vehicle and operate equipment;

Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone, and two?way radio; ability to see and read material and instructions and observe events at emergency scenes;

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees, superiors, and the public. Establishes a working climate in which employees are encouraged to work to their fullest potential.
