Upon Completion of Academy: $5,020.48 – $6,438.26/month

The City of Oxnard is excited to announce that it is currently accepting applications for the Firefighter Trainee position within the Fire Department. As a Firefighter Trainee, incumbents will attend a 16-week fire academy conducted by the Oxnard Fire Department designed to provide an overview of the fire service, training in various procedures and policies, emergency medical services, fire suppression techniques, fire prevention practices, and physical fitness.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Upon successful completion of fire academy.)

  • Responds to emergency medical calls
  • Fire alarms, rescues, hazardous materials, and other emergency calls
  • Protects life, environment and property endangered by fire and other hazards
  • Participates in regular fire prevention inspections
  • Assists in maintenance of fire stations and equipment
  • Participates in training exercises

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Modern principles and practices of fire prevention, hazardous materials, suppression, and emergency medical services
  • Functions, characteristic, and proper use and maintenance of firefighting equipment and supplies
  • Departmental rules and regulations; current laws and regulations pertaining to fire prevention and safety
  • City geography, fire hazards, and firefighting resources
  • Hazardous materials storage, transportation, and uses
  • First aid and rescue methods

Current Salary Range: $24.9865/hour during academy

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Firefighter Trainee is considered qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the following:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • No experience necessary

Highly desirable:

  • Ability to speak Spanish
  • Completion of a Fire Academy
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • EMT – Paramedic
  • Haz Mat Technician
  • Swift Water
  • Rescue Systems

License & Certificates Required to Qualify:

  • California Class C driver’s license at the time of employment
  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) (CPAT cannot be more than one year old at the time of application)
  • Current California EMT (not an EMT course completion record) OR National Registry EMT (NREMT) card
  • Must obtain a Ventura County EMT Card at the time of appointment to position

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

The salary for the Firefighter Trainee position is $4330.99 per month during academy; after the academy, $5020.48 – $6438.26 per month. The City offers an attractive benefits package which includes:

Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS):

  • New CALPERS members, employees hired after 1/1/2013, or those coming from another CALPERS or CALPERS’ reciprocal agency with a break in service exceeding 6 months will be required to pay the 12.25% of their annual earnings toward their retirement. Upon retirement, CalPERS offers a defined benefit plan based on a formula of 2.7% at age 57 for new members and a formula of 3% at age 50 for “classic” members. The City of Oxnard does not participate in social security; therefore employees do not receive a social security tax deduction in their earnings.

Vacation/Sick Leave Accrual Rates:

  • During academy: full time employees accrue vacation leave at a rate of 4.39 hours per pay period and sick leave at a rate of 3.7 hours per pay period. Upon completion of academy: annual leave 13.41-17.71 hours per pay period based on years of service.

Deferred Compensation:

  • The City offers a number of deferred compensation programs that employees may participate in.

Health and Dental:

  • The City contributes $112.39 per pay period toward medical (effective 1/1/17 City contribution increases to $144.6976 per pay period) `and $30.83 per pay period for dental insurance premiums. Unused premium monies are paid to the employee as taxable income.

Life Insurance:

  • City employees receive Basic Life ($5,000) and AD&D of ($10,000) which is 100% paid by the City. Employees also have the option to purchase additional insurance.

Tuition Reimbursement:

  • Full-time employees are eligible for $200 per fiscal year reimbursement for work related coursework.

Union Affiliation:

  • This position is unrepresented during the academy. Upon completion of the academy, will be represented by the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), a recognized public employee organization. Employees occupying this classification are required to pay union dues.

Holidays:

  • The City observes 10 holidays per year.

Emergency Response Time:

  • Upon completion of the academy, unit employees shall continue to reside at a location that would enable Unit employees to respond in an emergency to their work location within ninety (90) minutes or less based upon customary safe driving time and conditions.
