Under general supervision, responds to fire, medical emergencies and other emergency and non-emergency situations and takes appropriate action to protect life and property; performs advanced life support activities in a field environment and various staff support assignments in addition to normal emergency response activities; performs related work as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a working level class in fire suppression, having learned and being capable of performing all duties required to effectively respond to emergency fire suppression and advanced life support medical situations. This class is distinguished from Fire Engineer in that the latter class is fully qualified to operate any vehicles and apparatus in addition to performing all normal emergency response duties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are the regular duties of this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required as assigned TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responds to calls for medical aid, including traffic collisions and rescue situations; provides pre-hospital care, including examining patients and monitoring vital signs; establishes I.V. lines, administers medications, inserts airways, defibrillates hearts and takes other basic and advanced first aid and life support actions;
  • Communicates with hospital and/or health care professions in person or by radio;
  • Completes required reports, restocks supplies and cleans ambulance,
  • In a fire emergency, connects supply lines, controls and extinguishes fires using various size hand-lines; ladders and portable water monitors, connects foam educators and applies foam and chemicals for fire suppression and control;
  • Searches buildings and rescues victims from buildings and motor vehicles, sometimes using specialized power and hand tools to obtain entry to buildings, free trapped accident victims, and provides ventilation.
  • Participates in specialized rescue operations, including aerial and underground situations, including the use of rigging and shoring; participates in clean-up, salvage and overhaul operations,
  • Maintains physical fitness to the required level of job performance
  • Cleans, services and ensures operational readiness of vehicles, apparatus, hoses and equipment; maintains physical fitness to the required level of job performance,
  • Participates in various staff support assignments including but not limited to: fire prevention, inspection, maintenance of inventory records, scheduled inspection of departmental equipment, station and apparatus maintenance, fire inspections and investigations;
  • Contains, removes, and decontaminates hazardous material spills; employs appropriate fire fighting and chemical safety apparel and equipment, including turnout gear, helmets, hoods, and self-contained breathing apparatus; assists with the maintenance of station and facilities;
  • Works with the community in a variety of educational, public relations and service programs;
  • May serve in higher level classifications on a relief basis if certified and/or licensed to do so; may give training classes in CPR and medical support to the public and fire staff; may direct the work of others, particularly in a medical emergency.

QUALIFICATIONS:

NOTE: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Distinguishing Characteristics The following are the typical knowledge, abilities, and skills needed to perform the essential duties successfully. Knowledge and Application of: Basic principles and practices of fire suppression and prevention Basic principles and practices of emergency medical care at an advanced life support level Safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work Basic computer report production techniques.   Ability to Perform and Successfully Apply Skill In: Understand and following oral and written directions Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work Maintaining accurate records and preparing clear and concise reports and other written materials Remaining calm, making sound decisions, and responding appropriately in emergency situations Physical and Environmental Demands Must possess strength and stamina sufficient to lift and carry equipment and individuals weighing up to 150 pounds and be able to wear self-contained breathing apparatus Training and Experience Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities in qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and completion of a California State Fire Marshal accredited fire academy. Must possess a valid California driver’s license. Must possess current certification as a licensed California State Paramedic. Must be willing to work shifts as structured in the Fire Department.
Certification as a Firefighter I and college-level fire science coursework and previous firefighting experience in a volunteer or paid capacity is desirable.
