It’s Father’s Day next weekend and for once I have remembered this special occasion in advance, so it won’t be a mad dash to the shops to find a suitable gift. I usually find present-buying rather stressful because it’s hard to know exactly what someone else would want and I don’t want to ask them and spoil the surprise! So I’ve had a think and have come up with a couple of ideas for Father’s Day that are guaranteed to be a success.
Firstly (and probably the most likely gift I’ll be giving!) is power tools. If your dad, husband or brother has a garage or shed with a few tools in it, they will be certain to accept a power-tool present with glee! It can be hard to know which tools they already have without going hunting through their workshop, but you can solve this problem by getting a gift voucher for a power tool supplier OR choose a multi-tool such as this one from Anglia Tool Centre. Rather than buying a specific tool the multi-tool has at least got a few uses, so if your father already has a sander, he might make use of the grinder on this tool and so on. Given that the World Cup starts just before Father’s Day, with the first England game kicking off the night before, perhaps you could invest in some football gear for your father. An England supporters shirt would be a good gift for any footie-lover to unwrap on Father’s Day! Plus, international competitions always seem to spark off the need to have a ‘kick-about’ during half-time so a football would be well received too!

Finally, it’s hard to go wrong with food and drink so a thrifty idea for a Father’s Day gift is making your dad his favourite meal, baking a cake or ordering in his top takeaway. If your dad is a fan of real ales you can buy a selection of unusual bottles from the supermarket and package them up in an ice bucket or rustic wicker basket to make the gift even more special – or buy a ready-made mixed case of beers online.
