As most of you may know we are getting ready to leave for the Caribbean. We’ve joined the NARC Rally that leaves out of Newport Rode Island to Bermuda then down to the BVI’s. The rally is scheduled to leave on the 1st of November but due to some rough weather out on the Gulf Stream they are so far delaying it until the 2nd.
I never portray ourselves or myself as hardcore cruisers but everyone somehow thinks we are. Yes we live on a boat with small kids and have seen icebergs and travel a lot but we also stop a lot and have bad days and wish for land. I’ve been struggling with my inner demons on whether or not to sail with the boat down to the Caribbean or fly with the kids. It would be great to know that we could all work as a team and sail long passages together but am I willing to give up my sanity? We’ve been at the dock for almost 2 months now and our sea legs were left in Newfoundland. We took a two day sail down to Newport which left me on the saloon floor trying to convince my girls of “ no, mummy's not sick, just a little sleepy. Lets just have a bit of quiet time cuddling (in the fetal position)”. While Carl was in the cockpit trying to keep down the wonderful bread I had made 1 hour earlier. Why do I think that I”m letting myself, family and people out there that know us down? It should be what's best for my family and myself, why do I care. Image, Image, Image. I don’t wear designer jeans or stilettos but I do wish to wear the strong, independent, ready to take on the world pants. But you know what I am strong, I am taking on the world….. and I am going to fly with the kids to St. Thomas in a couple of weeks. Tail between my legs.
The kids and I will be staying on the boat as long as possible then driving back to Plymouth to stay with Carls mom. I’ll wait for the last minute to book out tickets down south so we won’t need to stay in a hotel down there. Our baby has had 6 weeks of ear infections and Pri is paranoid that she’ll get seasick so why make the kids miserable? This is an adventure of a lifetime, if I can bypass the sucky bit then kudos to me!
