Europe 2016 – Delos, Greece (1)

Posted on the 20 October 2016 by Cendrinemedia @cendrinemedia

The second port of call on my cruise was Mykonos. From there, we took a boat to Delos.

According to Greek mythology, Delos is the birthplace of Apollo (god of daylight) and his twin sister Artemis (goddess of night light). His sanctuary attracted pilgrims from all over Greece.

Delos was first settled in the third millennium BC and became a prosperous trading port after 167 BC. But it was attacked and looted twice. Then, it served as a pirate stronghold during Ottoman occupation, before being turned into a quarry site. Its temple columns were burnt for lime and its houses left in ruins.
