Epic Makes Unreal Engine 4 Free to Use, Releases “Sizzle Reel” Video

Epic Games has released a stunning sizzle reel at GDC 2015, showing the capabilities of its latest Unreal Engine 4. The company also made a surprising announcement, offering its suite of integrated game development and design tools for free.

“You can download the engine and use it for everything from game development, education, architecture, and visualization to VR, film and animation,” wrote Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games.

But there’s a catch..

“When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed.”

Back in 2014 Epic introduced a subscription plan that give access to Unreal software at $19 per month. But the new plan seems to be more profitable for the company, given the number of triple-A quality games being built using the new game engine. However, it also provides indie developers to play with the Unreal Engine 4 without having to worry over a monthly payment.

This means more opportunities for indie developers and game designers, although can’t say the same for big time game developers.
