Runners of all levels will be awakened to powerful parallels between running and the Christian life, equipped with relevant scripture, encouraged to persevere, and inspired with determination. You’ll be challenged to a deeper relationship with God.

I’ve been known to be a runner – in the past I’ve been confident in that label, but lately I feel like I’m anything but a runner. I really want to get back to it, but life’s adversities have kept me from doing so.

I’ve tried changing up some of the patterns in my life, but it seems like I’m just not getting it.  I took a few moments today and pulled out this book, Embracing the Race by Lisa Preuett.  It’s an awesome devotional and I was really impressed with Lisa Preuett’s sharing examples of the struggles she has faced and overcome, as well as those that are common to everyday life.  I have decided that I’m going to read one devotional each day for the next 40 days as I move forward in my journey to return to becoming a runner again and feeling confident.

I love that Ms. Preuett considers herself a “back of the pack” runner – I can relate to that. I also am moved by her passion to keep running and keep developing a better relationship with God.  Each chapter of the book starts with a key verse and then it is followed by a running analogy to the Christian life. The chapter then finishes with a life application piece, a key verse that supports the key topic and then a prayer to personalize the lesson.

The book itself is based on Scripture and there are many helpful Bible quotes.  Each devotion has a title relating to running a race and running God’s race with a relevant scripture. Even more important to everyone – don’t pass on this devotional just because you aren’t a runner – the book is not specifically or solely for runners or athletes. If you are a Christian, you are running the race of faith until the end when Jesus returns.

I didn’t know how awesome this book was as it sat in the stack of books. I’m embarrassed to admit it wasn’t until I opened it up and read one of the devotionals that I realized what a treasure I had among my fiction books.  Don’t wait like I did – pick up this book and you’ll have what you need to start your day as you pursue your walk (or run) with God!

Embracing the Race by Lisa Pruett Lisa Preuett is a follower of Jesus, wife, and mom of two. An avid runner, she’s completed multiple races from 5K to full marathon.
