Electric Run Recap

By Fitfulfocus @fitfulfocus

Uuunzz uunzz uunzz (<—- that’s the sounds of beats dropping and fists pumping). It’s also the sound of the Electric Run, aka my Saturday night.

That’s right, last Saturday instead of going out, drinking, and awkwardly dancing at a bar, my friends and I went out, ran, and awkwardly danced our way through a 5k.

Before I get into the details, let me tell you a little more about the Electric Run:

The Electric Run is a nighttime 5K fun run. Along the course, there are different electric wonderlands composed of different glowing light elements and music to match the mood. In a nutshell, it’s a rave converted into a race!

My friends and I started a team. We called ourselves…

…wait for it…

Team GLO BABY GLO.

I know. We are the epitome of cool.

Anyway, we were pretty pumped for the run. My friend and I went out to pick up the essentials:

  • glo sticks
  • black light paint pens
  • flashing jewelry
  • bright green and yellow tutus (obviously)

We headed out early to pick up our race packets and get decked out in our electric accessories.

Soon enough, the sun was down and we were at the starting line! The music was blasting, everyone was glowing, and we were pumped to get started! Check it out!

Then we were off! And unfortunately, this is where the race started to get a little disappointing. We crossed the finish line, and the music and energy quickly faded away. Suddenly, we were just running down a dark concrete path. The music was behind us and all we had to light the path beneath our feet were some glow sticks and flashing bracelets. Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous about tripping over a pot hole or a rock or my own two uncoordinated feet.

Hope struck when we could see the glow of the first wonderland up ahead. We reached it a minute or so later. I was expecting to be surrounded by black lights, glowing statues, and extravagant light shows. What we got was a few blow-up decorations with lights inside. They looked cool, but it was a little disappointing. We went from an ethereal “land” with flowy squid things to a candy land with jumbo sized gummy bears (which were pretty cool. I’ll give them that) to another stretch of silent darkness to a rainbow land to another stretch of silent darkness.

Soon, we were at the halfway turn around point. It was the only spot along the whole course with black lights, and we had to stand in just the right spot to actually be under it and see our $6 black light pen come to life.

Then, we were running back the way we came and… what the heck?! The same songs were playing on the way back that were playing on the way there! This is supposed to be an Electric Run! Music is key, and they’re playing a looped playlist of about 3 songs? Shame on you playlist creator, shame on you. Nevertheless, we danced and took more pictures:

A bit later, we crossed the finish line in style (my friend made this cute time lapse video):

We headed to the water station only to discover… they were out of water! We were among the first people to start and probably among the first to finish and they were out of water. What?!

We shrugged it off (luckily we’d left water in the car) and headed to the post-race party which was complete with a DJ who was pretty good. We danced a bit and had some fun before heading home.

Overall, I had a blast dancing through the course, having mini sprint races through the dead stretches, and taking pictures with my friends, but overall, the Electric Run was a bit disappointing considering the $60+ entrance fee. Maybe I had high expectations for what the race would be, but I dub this race: not as good as advertised. Next time, I’ll just find an actual rave and run to it.

Wish I could have given this race 10 stars, but you know what I do give a good rating? AMRAP bars! And you can enter to win some! Check out the giveaway details here and/or enter to win below!
