EAT: Grimaldi’s Pizzeria – Brooklyn, NY

By Jsleigh14 @jsleigh14

As I was asking around about good restaurants in Brooklyn, I was told that the original Grimaldi’s Pizzeria is a must-go. This Downtown Brooklyn restaurant is located nearby Brooklyn bridge and is rated the #1 pizzeria in New York by Zagat. I’m not the biggest pizza fan on Earth, since I fear them being too greasy. But, I still gave this place a try since I figured that it must have its fame for its reasons.

As I walked in to Grimaldi’s, I saw that all pizzas are actually made and prepared from scratch as they are ordered. I was quite impressed, since I don’t see this work too often nowadays!

Grimaldi’s only serves pizza by the pie, not by the slice. Pizzas are usually shared because they’re pretty large in size. Me and my friend shared a Large White Pizza with Italian sausage, mushrooms, and anchovies. I liked the idea of a white pizza because it has no tomatoes, extra cheese, and garlic, making it different from the traditional tomato sauce pizza that I’m too used to having. The pizza took about a half hour wait, but I wasn’t bothered since I understood that it was being made from scratch. And when I finally sank my teeth into this pizza, I was amazed – it was the best pizza I’ve ever had! It even beat down most the pizza I had in Italy. Since this pizza was baked, my fear of greasiness didn’t occur at all, and it was obvious how fresh the entire pie was. If only all pizzas were like this…

To accompany my pizza, I ordered an Orange Olde Brooklyn Soda – I thought it was appropriate. It was a decently good cold drink and its sweetness balanced out the saltiness of the pizza.

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria gave me back some optimism in pizza. The food here was absolutely amazing and the waiting times were reasonable. I can’t say that the service here was too awesome though, but I didn’t mind because that’s not what I came here for anyways. Otherwise, I can definitely see myself coming here again next time I’m in Brooklyn. Good pizza definitely still exists, and this is where you can find it.
