Although we use it every day, it does not necessarily mean that a bathroom is safe; and it is especially a dangerous place if you have your child wandering around without any supervision. For adults it is not only understandable what the hidden dangers of the bathroom are, but we are also capable of looking out for ourselves, even in tight situations, but for children, it is important to make sure that they are not just wandering around aimlessly. In order to make your bathroom safe for children, there are a few steps you will need to take, but once they get old enough, they can visit the bathroom alone.
Do Not Make Everything Accessible to Children
You cannot keep your eyes on your child throughout the whole day, which is why it is important to childproof doors, and to install locks which only adults can use. You should however install these locks on other doors as well, but the bathroom is your main concern as there are many dangers in there which could potentially harm your child. Moreover, you will be able to limit their movement to a degree where you do not have to worry about them all the time.
Hiding Dangerous Chemicals
Whether you store your cleaning supplies in the bathroom or in another place, it is vital that you properly lock your cabinets so that your children cannot reach for those products and accidentally swallow something they should not. Not only that but make sure to install childproof locks on cabinets too, because children are crafty and they will be able to figure out where you hide the keys. Nevertheless, remember to make spare keys for just in case, but always keep them out of the reach of children.
Be Careful with Wet Floors
Children love to splash around with water, and they will try to make a mess when taking a bath, or when just simply going to wash their hands. Water is all fun and games until someone slips and falls; and in order to reduce the chance of slipping, it is always a good idea to get a few non-slippery mats which will help in making your bathroom less slippery and less prone for accidents. Put a few around in your bathroom at critical spots which are always wet, so that nobody has to fall and break something.
Toilets are Dangerous
Although it might seem like a bit too much, but you should make sure that you secure your toilet too; there is always a chance that your kid might fall in accidentally and they can pull something or breaking something; not to mention that they can drown as well. However, if you install childproof toilet covers, it will be impossible for children to hurt themselves no matter what; and always make sure that you escort your child to the bathroom, but respect their privacy. When they are old enough, gradually remove the toilet seat lock mechanism so that they can become more autonomous.
Upgrading Your Bathroom
In most cases the bathroom renovation costs will not be as high as you might first imagine, but it will require careful planning and some precise installment as you cannot rush childproofing. Although certain locking mechanisms will be expensive, you can install them at different stages, and it will help you with your budget; and it will not be necessary to renovate your whole bathroom at once. However, make sure that you gradually remove certain improvements once your child is old enough.
Childproofing Your Bathroom
Be aware that securing your bathroom will take some time, and it will be important to make sure that your bathroom is completely safe; but be careful not to overdo it, as it might be too stressful for you and your child to use the facilities. On the other hand, if you install everything and secure your bathroom, it will be possible for your child to have a carefree childhood, but only if they play by the rules as well. How much security you will need depends on your bathroom and how well-behaved your child is; but make sure that you set aside a budget for security upgrades.
