This inner beauty has also served to inspire Gübelin designers for the Drops of Water line. In creating pieces of jewellery based on microphotographs of a sapphire. This technique makes visible the fascinating shapes and plays of color. Which have arisen within apatite crystals, allowing designers and artisans to virtually immerse themselves into the inner life of the gems. Turn their individual designs into timelessly elegant pieces of jewellery.

This led to the rounded shapes, be they ovals, drops or half-moons found in the Drops of Water line, set in delicate prongs. For these creations, Gübelin uses both blue gems such as sapphires and tanzanites as well as rubies, emeralds, violet or pink sapphires.

The Drops of Water line is part of Gübelin’s Deep Sea world of jewellery, which is based on the inner world of sapphires, Paraiba tourmalines and other blue gemstones. Their spectacular inclusions are reminiscent of mysterious oceans, fairy-tale sea creatures and marvellous corals.

A Pioneer of Gemmology

Eduard Josef Gübelin (1913–2005) is considered one of the pioneers in the field of gemmology. His studies of the inclusions in gemstones revolutionised science and laid the foundations for identifying them. With his impressive microphotographs, he also revealed the inner beauty of coloured gems. His Photo Atlas of Inclusions in Gemstones, a standard work of gemmology. Includes a photo of the sapphire which inspired the designers to develop the Drops of Water line.

This line is an expression of the Deeply Inspired philosophy for which Gübelin is renowned. “Whatever our undertaking, our inspiration has always come from equal parts of beauty and knowledge”, says Raphael Gübelin, President of the Swiss family-owned business. To symbolise this philosophy, each piece of Gübelin Jewellery contains a ruby. It is considered the king of gemstones and stands for passion and love.

Eduard Josef Gübelin on the Inner Life of Sapphires –

“A delicate coat of silken velvet sheen spreads over it, leading the glance into its hidden depths, rendered as unfathomable as mountain lakes by a tiny trace of cobalt blue. Of enchanting beauty and nearly as valuable is the marine blue sapphire, dazzling yet warmly radiant crystallised drops of the deep blue oriental ocean.”
