Drag Racing In Alaska Presents Unique Challenges

The Iditarod, sled-dog race is not the only race that thrill's crowds in Alaska. The Drag Racing season has just opened at the IHRA track, Alaska Raceway Park in Palmer. "While we have never had to shovel snow to begin racing on Mother's Day, we have come close," Alaska Raceway Park co-owner and CFO Karen Lackey said. The Alaska track has it's own set of challenges beyond the weather - like a visit by the occasional moose, which is certainly a entertaining sight for visitors.

The season is off to a great start, and will run through Labor Day in September. And, if you're looking for a unique experience then here are a few reasons the Alaska Raceway Park is the track to visit:

Because the track is 63 feet above sea level it is ideal for high-horsepower engines.

The view of the 6,398-foot Pioneer Peak that overlooks the finish line makes this track one of the most scenic racing venues in the world.
Alaska Raceway Park opened a 1/3-mile asphalt oval track; the new facility is home to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition. The oval track features 12 NASCAR-related events this season.
Since this is the only track in the state, Alaska Raceway Park is the place to catch the IHRA Summit Super Series. And, the series faced its own challenges until recent IHRA rule changes. 
"Weather is not nearly as much a factor in participating in the Summit SuperSeries as is distance," said Lackey. Because of the location of the Raceway, racers had to drive long distances to advance in the series. However, recent rule changes to the IHRA Summit SuperSeries now allow track champions in each class to advance directly into the Summit World Finals at Memphis International Raceway in October.

"Getting to Memphis usually involves shipping the car and trailer to Seattle and then hauling cross-country," Lackey said. "Our drivers are much happier with the recent changes in rules which mean they only have to make one trip 'outside.' 'Outside' is Alaskan for travel to the lower 48 states."
