You know what I’m talking about – you’re at an event and it’s your job to introduce the speaker, or it’s the “Share what you do” segment and your marketing spiel slipped right out of your ear, or the ultimate terror – when your boss, the industry association or your child’s teacher says, “Would you please speak to our group?”
Truth: You present in some form continually.
It might be:
- To offer a solution with your product or service (sales professional)
- To share ideas in front of a group
- To get people to follow direction
- To share a vision
- To attain a promotion
- To get your kids to do something
- …And even to get a date!
Lately many of my clients have been requesting help with presentation skills – and whether you must speak to an audience of one or one thousand – presentation skills are not only good skills to have – they are vital!
Here are a few things to remember whenever you are presenting (taken from my Mastering Your Presentation Skills 2 CD set):
1. Have a plan – those that “Wing it” are dishonoring their audiences -
2. Know your intent or goal – Why are you even doing this presentation? Is it to inspire? To Motivate? To generate New Thinking?
3. Ask yourself before you ever step on the platform: “How do I want this audience to feel?” Cooperative? Encouraged? Interested? Courted? Empowered? Remember, emotion sells!
4. Know and communicate with your audience the actions you want them to take from your presentation. A call to action at the end is a MUST! Leave them satisfied yet wanting more.
