DIY All Natural Bug Spray (for Your Home)

By Lindsayleighbentley @lindsayLbentley

I live in Tennessee.  Aka: Land of the Spiders.  We also have moths, mosquitos, ants, beetles, fleas, ticks, you name it.

They are everywhere.  I will vacuum webs up and the next day, there will be another.  I just flat out refuse to call a bug guy because I wholeheartedly believe that those chemicals do way too much harm to the earth, our water, and our bodies.  Even their “green” products aren’t natural enough to be where my tiny baby crawls around.

So, I put together a recipe based on research I’ve done.

The great thing about natural products is that they are often just as effective or MORE effective than the toxic chemical stuff.  I just used this inside and outside my house and watched one of the biggest spiders I’ve ever seen die in less than 1 minute of being sprayed.

Ok, so I LOOOVE Young Living Essential oils, but I couldn’t bring myself to dump that many precious, pure oils into a jar and spray it into the corners of my home, inside and out.

SO, I ordered cheap, but still good quality oils from Vitacost.com. (Use this link to get $10 off your first purchase!)

I felt fine using these oils on my home, but wouldn’t not recommend using them on the skin as I haven’t been able to vouch for their purity the way I have Young Living.

Here’s my recipe:

Just dump all the ingredients together in a sprayer, shake, and spray. You can buy a chemical sprayer here, at any hardware store, or just reduce the amounts and put it in a spray bottle!  (1 gal = 128 fluid ounces)

This recipe makes 2 gallons, which will last me about 4 months or so.  Our house is 3700 sq feet and I did the inside, and nearly everything outside, until it started raining on me.  It cost roughly $85 for the oils and glycerin.  Considering I’ll be able to do my entire house (inside and out!) about 4 times with this amount I’m really happy!  Cheaper than the “bug guys” and way healthier for your family.

WORD TO THE WISE –  THIS IS SUPER STRONG so use this sparingly!  I didn’t have all the lights on when I sprayed, and subsequently I WAY over did it.  I tend to be a “more is better” kind of girl and it has backfired here.

Just spray a light mist in corners, behind furniture, under beds, along windowsills, exterior doorways, or any other areas where bugs like to hide.

It makes me so happy to know that I could spray under my kids’ beds, directly on Etta’s baby swing, and in the kitchen without it harming any precious little baby bodies.
