Did The Vampire Diaries Seriously Just Try to Ruin the Biggest Delena Hookup Ever?

Did The Vampire Diaries seriously just try to ruin the biggest Delena hookup ever?

If you didn't see 4x07, watch out for massive spoilers.  And be happy your soul is currently deprived of the terrible angst that will seize upon it after you watch this episode.

There's no way the writers of The Vampire Diaries didn't know how horribly mean it was to interrupt the Delena love scene in this episode with the irritating revelation that Elena may be sired to Damon.  I mean, it seems really petty to do that to all the poor shippers after waiting three seasons plus for Delena to seriously happen.

There should be no effing extenuating, problematic circumstances to Damon and Elena's first bedroom scene.

Damon and Elena are in love, and whether or not an accidental sire bond resulted from his turning Elena to save her life, that fact remains.  The best possible way this can play out will be if it turns out there was no sire bond at all; that twist would pay off in such a lovely way all around.

On top of that, were the writers trying to make Caroline completely obnoxious in this episode? I think Elena already has a judgmental friend who criticizes her for even thinking about thinking about Damon, and her name is Bonnie.  I knew Caroline was a Stelena shipper, but dude, give us all a break!  Caroline's holier than thou attitude is just getting ridiculous.  But there's more to it than that, more on which to follow.

The writers may be cruel and very strange, but they also have incredible fits of genius.  Every scene between Damon and Elena in this episode was beautiful in its own way.  This also comes down in huge part to fantastic performances from Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, which were probably a bit influenced by real-life feelings in the nicest way possible.  As exquisite as that last Damon/Elena scene was, the most romantic moment might have been earlier, when Elena told Damon why she broke up with Stefan.  The looks on their faces!  Just irrevocably - to reclaim a term - epic.

Note Damon's surprise when Elena says "you."  He has no idea about any sire bond.  Of course, that's neither here nor there if there is no friggin' sire bond, which there shouldn't be if there is any justice in the world.

Moreover, I may frown upon the way Caroline bitches on and on about the evils of Delena, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bit of very intriguing subtext to her behavior.  After all, it's kind of obvious that Caroline is just deflecting onto Elena all of her own guilt for her repressed feelings for Klaus.  Caroline is attracted to a bad boy vampire, so she harasses Elena for the same offense, and it makes her feel better for subconsciously straying from Tyler.  As Steroline shippers are sure to contend, the guilt Caroline may feel about her long-gestating emotional attachment to Stefan may also be a factor in her insensitive conduct toward Elena.   So I hate the aggressively negative energy it throws at Delena, but I like the multi-layeredness of Caroline's bossy-pants silliness.

She's also kind of brilliant in the way she put the whole "sire" theory together.

And there were some amazing Klaroline scenes in this episode!  Even if I do resent the way I'm being forced to turn away from Forewood.  I can't help it.  I mean, it's Klaroline!

There must be nothing the writers can do to make us truly hate Caroline, because she's just made of too much awesome.  If this episode didn't do it, nothing will.

On a totally separate note, it's still odd to have Faye from The Secret Circle on TVD basically playing a werewolf version of the same exact character.  You mean "Hailey" is duplicitous?!  Why, I never would have guessed.

This season is so majorly messed up and random that viewers can be forgiven for never knowing which end is up.  Let's just hope that the ongoing story arc involving the "cure" (which I'm pretty sure no viewer truly wants for Elena - because seriously - yawn much?) and the vampire hunters gets a bit more logical and compelling.  How about letting poor Bonnie feature in more than every other episode, and giving her some real plotlines aside from being everyone's pawn, or going around judging everyone (even though she is much better at it than Caroline)?

Words fail me in considering the wretched interplay of emotions felt upon the end of this episode.  Luckily, we can now watch the all-important last Delena scene without the insulting and draining expositional revelation of the dumb-ass "sired" nonsense.
