Design Treat: Pineapple Wall Sconces and Misplaced Guilt

Posted on the 13 November 2012 by Redlilocks
I've been a little bit in love with pineapple sconces since I saw this gorgeous shot of a bedroom on Little Green Notebook earlier this year.

For months and months, I scoured eBay looking for something vintage with no luck.   OK, it was more than a little bit in love.
I was obsessed.
When Abigail Ahern showed off her own pineapple sconce again later this summer, I decided that at some point, I was going to have to bite the bullet and spend the money on purchasing new ones.   After all, I had had my old ones for 14 years.  Seriously.  FOURTEEN YEARS.

Someday, I said to myself.  Someday.

Well, I'm happy to report that the time is now dammit.  Purchasing them directly from Atelier Abigail Ahern saved me a couple quid on shipping although I could have also ordered them directly from Caravan.
I have to say, despite a nagging guilt about splurging on something so seemingly frivolous, I absolutely love them.

And if they make me happy every time I look at them, isn't that enough to discount any misplaced feelings that somehow I have done something wrong in spending the money?
I do wonder at times why it is that women especially seem to feel a strange guilt when they 'treat' themselves.  In my experience, I don't find as many men out there who have pangs of guilt for spending hundreds of pounds on the newest games console when they have a perfectly acceptable games console already.   Or that new phone.  Or that bigger television.

They buy them, they enjoy them and that is enough.  Something I need to learn perhaps.

Have you treated yourself to something deliciously frivolous lately?  Do you also feel guilty at times for treating yourself?  If so, how do you talk yourself out of such a wasted emotion?  Is this something that's just prevalent around women (mums I find especially) or do you see it afflict men as well?  I would love to hear your thoughts on this!
