Death and Serious Injuries in North St. Louis, Missouri Car CrashOne person has died and two men are in critical condition following an auto accident in North St. Louis at the intersection of North Broadway and Branch. Acording to Fox News,  a Ford Explorer sideswiped a vehicle belonging to the St. Louis City License Collector at 9th Street and North Market. The driver of that vehicle called 911 and stated that he saw the Ford Explorer travel on the highway and exit onto Branch.

The Ford Explorer then proceeded to run a stop sign at the intersection of Branch and Broadway and crashed into a gray Pontiac with three men inside.  The men inside the Pontiac were trapped and had to be extricated by the St. Louis Fire Department.  The driver of the Pontiac was pronounced dead at the scene and the other two male passengers are in critical condition at the hospital.  The driver of the Ford Explorer is also being examined and questioned at the hospital. He was arrested as well, charges still unknown.

Car accidents happen under the best conditions when people are trying to drive safely. However, reckless driving and gross inattention are never excusable reasons for an accident.  As of yet, we do not know if the driver of the Ford Explorer was under the influence or simply driving recklessly.  Side swiping a car and then running a stop sign are the kind of behaviors that make all of us unsafe.  Whether or not the driver of the Ford Explorer was under the influence, fatigued, reckless or simply inattentive; having two incidents gives the appearance reckless driving.  It will be interesting to see what the investigation shows in later reports. Right now, two people have serious injuries as a result of this choice and one man is dead.

Even if the driver of the Ford Explorer is charged with a crime such as a DUI (pending blood work) or failure to obey road signs, or reckless driving; those are criminal charges and do nothing in the way of compensating the victims.  Victims of this auto accident like this may have to consult a personal injury attorney for their injury claims and the family of the man killed may have to seek a wrongful death claim against the Ford Explorer’s driver’s insurance carrier before any compensation can be obtained.  Frankly, the first days after such a tragedy, it is difficult for the victims and family to even think that far down the road.  Dealing with the shock and trauma of life changing injuries and loss will be a journey that none of them should have to go through alone.
