ESCAPISM (noun) : habitual diversion of the mind to purely imaginative activity or entertainment as an escape from reality or routine
It’s also a term often used to explain our love of television, movies, etc. It let’s us look into the lives of others and imagine what their existence must be like.
In the category of drama, that proposition is exhausting to say the least.
Seriously, I don’t know how these people get out of bed in the morning. If it’s not mob bosses then it’s trouble at work, dashed playoff dreams, another political scandal, problems with the spouse, the savage murder of a good friend, dragons, a serial killer (with a heart of gold) living next door, or who knows what else.
I have to imagine the only thing keeping them going is their impeccable wardrobes and apparent live in makeup artists they all must have…and I wouldn’t be too sure those are just Tic Tacs.
Truth be told, although I watch far more television than I care to admit to I only watch one of the six nominated shows for Outstanding Drama Series.
I would blame it on my inherent lack of HBO and/or Showtime, but we all know that is a lame excuse. Plus, Dexter is the one show I’ve watched, so it’s a moot point.
However, although we may not want to actually escape to Dexter’s Miami, the world of Don Draper (might be worth it?), Prohibition era Atlantic city (not worth it), or the medieval times of Game of Thrones (it sounds romantic until you consider the plumbing, or lack there of it, then it’s all downhill), but for a few hours every week it’s nice to imagine.
And while I may prefer to hang out on a time-warped deserted island, with the Walker Family, wander the halls of Seattle Grace, or maybe mosey on over to zombie infested Atlanta, the world of the drama never ceases to amaze (and make our problems seem much smaller…nothing trumps zombies…nothing).
