In 1948, the Great Britain Football team goalkeeper was Ronnie Simpson. Aged just 18, he played for Glasgow’s famous Queen’s Park from the age of fourteen. Queen’s Park remain the only amateur club to play at senior level in British football – making Simpson a true Olympian. In 1967 he became the first British goalie to win a European Cup Winner’s medal when Celtic defeated Inter Milan 2-1. In 1968 the GB team’s manager from 1948 – Matt Busby – emulated his former goalkeeper’s achievements by leading Manchester United to European Cup glory.
